The Term “On-Demand”
What do you think of when you hear the term “on-demand?” You probably think of your nifty television that can play your favorite TV shows at the click of a button. The question is not “when will my show be on,” but rather “should I binge the whole first season or not?” A tankless or on-demand water heater functions similarly.
While a conventional water heater must fill up a tank full of water and then heat it, an on-demand water heater superheats the water as it enters your home. Basically, by using gas jets or electric coils, an on-demand water heater heats the water instantly, giving you water “on-demand” exactly when you need it. No waiting for the tank to fill up, no sitting their wondering when the water will become hot, just instant hot water for you and your family.
Just a Few Benefits
Here are just a few simple reasons to invest in an on-demand water heater.
- Unlimited hot water access. While we don’t recommend anyone test this theory, you do have access to as much hot water as you could possible need with an on-demand water heater. As long as the water keeps coming and your system is still working, it will give you instant hot water.
- High efficiency. Conventional tank water heaters suffer from a problem called “standby heat loss,” which is an obnoxious way of saying that heat is always escaping the tank when it’s not in use. With an on-demand water heater, you cut this heat loss out of the equation entirely, leading to lower water heating bills!
- Increased reliability. On-demand water heaters don’t come into contact with water as much as tank water heaters do. You deal with less corrosion and maintenance needs with these kinds of systems.
Is It Right for You?
Hold your horses! While tankless water heaters are an incredible system, they’re no perfect. For instance, if it’s improperly sized, it could have trouble providing enough hot water for your entire family. Also, on-demand water heaters cost more to install than conventional water heaters, because of how much more technologically advanced they are.
